Feline coronavirus (FCoV), which causes feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), is shed in the faeces. FCoV infection occurs when cats ingest (or inhale) the virus. FCoV is a very contagious virus and it only takes a tiny speck of cat litter dust from a litter tray previously used by an infected cat for the virus to spread. FCoV is a moderately stable virus, lasting up to 7 weeks in the environment (so it is not as stable as parvovirus, which can survive for a year, but is a lot more stable than feline herpesvirus which survives only about 12 hours). FCoV is protected by cat faeces, by cat litter (unless the litter has anti-virus properties) and the by the stable environment inside a house or shelter. Outdoors, cat faeces is buried by the cat and is rapidly broken down in the soil. Cats do not seek out each others’ faeces, as dogs do, so there is a good chance of the FCoV dying long before another cat is exposed to it. Of course, FCoV has evolved to deal with this problem and is incredibly infectious and is shed at a rate of billions of particles per gram (or ounce) of faeces. In this animation we meet Augustus, a healthy FCoV infected cat, and see how when he uses a litter tray, his faeces contains billions of the highly infectious virus. Augustus will shed virus in his faeces for a few weeks or months, then will stop shedding the virus — it is likely that nobody will ever know that he was infected. THEY HAD THEIR USUAL BREAKFASTS, AND THE CAT CARRIER IS STILL HIDDEN WHERE IT WAS SINCE REG CAME SIX WEEKS AGO, BUT CHLOE WON’T LET ME TOUCH HER AND SHE KEEPS WIMPERING (LISTEN CAREFULLY AND REPEATEDLY), WHICH SHE NEVER DOES. We have quite a few stray and feral cats in our area. We do what we can for them, including trying to catch the feral ones to have them fixed in the local catch/spay/release program. We have three 8 month old feral girls we’ve been trying to get close to since their Mommy brought them around. (We were able to catch mommy when she left them on their own. She was once again very pregnant. We were luck that the local SPCA took her. She had 5 more kittens who the SPCA are trying to find homes for. They have fixed Mommy and she has been adopted. I am certain that this little kitten was the first born of the litter of the smallest of the three feral girls. As we name every cat who turns up, whether they are in the yard for a day or decide this is their home, we call her Tiny. She was extremely friendly that day and for the first time didn’t run when I got within a few feet of her, and she actually let me touch her. When I petted her, I ran my hand along her tail and my hand came back with blood on it. I new she was in labour and was able to get her into a cat carrier.
